TRENTHAM TOWER, SANDON ESTATE, STAFFORDSHIRE
A country house with extensive gardens and pleasure grounds set in landscaped park. Sandon Hall which is listed grade II*, was built in 1852 to a design by William Burn. The highest ground at Sandon occurs near the centre of Upper Park, and here stands Trentham Tower. This, the upper part of one of the stone towers of Trentham Hall, designed c 1840 by Sir Charles Barry, was moved here after demolition of the Hall in 1910-11.
Trentham Tower, which sits in the middle of the landscaped estate, was on the Building at Risk register prior to the works being carried out. We led the project to repair the tower, which included stone repairs and the addition of a new lime render to the base of the unique belvedere.
In 2017, the project was awarded an AABC Conservation Commendation at the Civic Trust Awards. The commendation stated that 'the programme of repair has restored the Tower to a good condition, and has left a building which can again be enjoyed as a feature within a fine landscape park.'
