ST. MARY AND ST. JOHN, WOLVERHAMPTON
The Catholic church of SS. Mary & John in Wolverhampton was constructed to the designs of Charles Francis Hansom , a member of the dynasty of Catholic architects. It is one of two grade II* listed Catholic churches in Wolverhampton, described as “a good example of a mid-Victorian Catholic church, notable particularly for its rich interior fittings and the excellent naturalistic carving of corbels and capitals.”
Following a Quinquennial Inspection in 2012, Stephen Oliver identified serious concerns with ongoing decay to the west end high-level masonry, glazing and roofing. An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund was successfully made and Oliver Architecture were appointed as Architect and Principal Designer. The work includes alterations to make the Narthex more open as well as more secure. The project was completed in 2017. We are currently working on North Side repairs and the reinstatement of buttresses and stone carvings.
