Sacrewell Farm is a working farm and heritage attraction located in Cambridgeshire. The farm is operated by the William Scott Abbott Trust. Around 85,000 people visit each year, using the site to learn about farming and heritage.
At the centre of the farm is a Grade II-listed farmhouse, dating from c.1760. The building was once part of the working agricultural heart of the site, but has been vacant for over 13 years. Unfortunately, in that time, it has slipped into decline, and is now in a vulnerable condition.
The Trust successfully secured funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to carry out a feasibility study called Saving Sacrewell’s Farmhouse and Understanding its Potential. Appointed as Architect, we are developing up to three options for the farmhouse. Each scenario will explore a viable future use for the building and look to balance any conservation elements with Sacrewell’s operational need, overall visitor experience and its long-term financial sustainability.

A key element of the work is identifying how the Farmhouse can be brought back into meaningful use as part of the wider visitor offer at the farm. The options appraisal is considering how the building could support education, interpretation, hospitality or other income-generating uses, which will help to strengthen the Trust’s long-term resilience and secure the future of the building.
This project is a crucial step in reversing the decline of the Farmhouse and ensuring its future. It will provide the strategic and technical foundation needed for securing a sustainable long-term role for one of Sacrewell’s most important historic buildings.
