COFFIN WORKS, JEWELLERY QUARTER, BIRMINGHAM

Picture
The grade II* listed building is a purpose-built coffin furniture manufactory dating from 1892-4 for Newman Brothers who continued in business here until 1999, at which point the building was in a very poor condition.  Birmingham Conservation Trust began a long campaign to save the building and its contents, which was eventually successful in securing large grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others.

Whilst an Associate at Rodney Melville & Partners, Stephen Oliver led the team which delivered the award-winning rescue of Newman Bros. Coffin Fitting Works in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter on behalf of Birmingham Conservation Trust.  Oliver Architecture subsequently became a tenant in the Coffin Works.  Our offices are located in a project in which we played a major part. In 2020, we carried out a quinquennial inspection of the Coffin Works.

In 2015 the project was awarded: the RICS West Midlands awards for both Building Conservation and Tourism & Leisure; one of the Historic England Angel Awards; and the Birmingham Civic Society Renaissance Award.
