BIRMINGHAM PALS MEMORIAL, BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY
On the outbreak of the First World War, 3 infantry battalions were formed from volunteers raised in Birmingham. In one week, 4500 men volunteered, and these friends, relatives and colleagues became known as the Birmingham Pals. The battalions formed part of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (now amalgamated as part of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers). They served with distinction on the Western Front and elsewhere, 650 being killed in action and 400 awards for bravery being awarded.
