CANONS ASHBY, NORTHHAMPTONSHIRE
Canons Ashby, “as Antient as the Druids”, is set in rural tranquility within Northamptonshire. A large monastic site, of which the truncated church remains, is occupied by a manor house with 16th century origins and subsequent work from c.1710, the home of the Dryden family. It remained almost unchanged until it was acquired by the National Trust in 1980 and repaired by Rodney Melville. The house is listed grade I, within a registered park and garden.
Stephen Oliver is Property Architect for the National Trust at Canons Ashby, having worked here since 1999. Several Quinquennial Inspections have been carried out, as well as the conversion of outbuildings to form visitor facilities. Recent work has included a programme of repairs to the garden walls, which are scheduled ancient monuments, as well as rebuilding a brick chimney.
